Where it comes from
The name joins gulab, rose (for the rose-scented syrup), and jamun, a dark Indian fruit the dumplings resemble. Food historians trace the dessert to sweets brought to India from Persia.
No Indian celebration is complete without it: gulab jamun is served at Diwali, weddings and birthdays across India and the diaspora.
